Endothelial Function
Endothelial Function is an important parameter that signifies the health of the lining inside the arterial wall. Endothelial Function is vital to maintain as clinical literature suggests that abnormal endothelial function is directly correlated with atherosclerosis.. Atherosclerosis is known to be the hardening and development of plaque inside the artery that leads to blockages from various forms of vascular disease such as Coronary Artery Disease & Peripheral Vascular Disease.
Endothelial function can be assessed with accurate and reproducible measurements by extracting various hemodynamic parameters. The study is administered by occluding blood flow in the arm by gauging the post-ischemic pulsatile component of flow and the artery’s largest volume change. The dilation of the arterial segment is directly correlated with endothelial function. As discussed, Endothelial Function is believed to be a indicator of Atherosclerosis & Coronary Artery Disease. This study is evolving to be a vital component as the information & management of is a critical component if detected in the early stages.
Overview of Arterial Health
The arterial wall is composed of four circular structures. The structure in contact with blood in the arteries is called the endothelium. The endothelium excrete need cells known as nitric oxide. The release of nitric oxide is critical as it causes the small arteries to dilate (or expand) the vessesl which is vital for delivery of increased blood flow when needed. Further, the release of nitric oxide causes the larger arteries to increase in size. Over time, these two factors are important as they reduce the workload for the heart.
Devices that Measure Endothelial Function
There are several devices available that are useful for measuring the physiological change of the arterial endothelium from the release of nitric oxide (NO) after Reactive Hyperemia. The devices obtain a measurement of blood vessels and flow that is used to assess the health of the endothelium. For more information, you can email us info@externalcounterpulsation.com.
